April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, “For people with Parkinson’s disease (PD), exercise is more than keeping healthy — it is a vital component to maintaining balance, mobility and activities of daily living. Exercise and physical activity can improve many PD symptoms”.
The American Parkinson Disease Association names these four core elements of exercise that are important for people with PD:
– Aerobic activities that get the heart pumping – e.g. brisk walking, stationary cycling.
– Strengthening – e.g. using weights or resistance bands to improve muscle strength.
– Balance – e.g. tai chi, yoga, Pilates, dance to help you be more steady on your feet.
– Stretching – e.g. mat exercises, yoga to provide flexibility.
Remember that safety is key. For more information on membership and/or personal training please visit the Member Services desk.
