SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. These five powerful words turn vague aspirations into actionable blueprints for success.
According to Forbes.com, there are five elements to S.M.A.R.T. goals:
Specific
Specific goals have a desired outcome that is clearly understood. Define what will be accomplished and the actions to be taken to accomplish the goal. Ex: I want to lose 10 pounds in 3 months.
Measurable
These are the numbers used with the goal. Define what data will be used to measure the goal and set a method for collection. Ex: I will lose 3-4 pounds per month. I will track body composition changes monthly using a body fat analyzer or progress photos.
Achievable
Goals need to be realistic in order to maintain the enthusiasm to try to achieve them. Ex: I will start with bodyweight exercises and gradually introduce dumbbells, increasing weight as strength improves.
Relevant
Goals should be aligned with your personal mission for a healthy lifestyle. Ex: Losing 10 pounds will help build muscle, boost metabolism, improve posture, and increase confidence.
Time-Bound
Goals should have a deadline. This doesn’t mean that all the work is done, but it means that you can evaluate the success of the endeavor and set new goals. Ex: I will attend two group exercise classes per week that focus on strength training to achieve my goal in 3 months.
S.M.A.R.T. goals are not just about getting fit; they’re about building a sustainable relationship with your health and well-being. They empower you to take control, track your progress, and celebrate every victory.
